We ended up at Cosmic Cafe for my mom's birthday--she's a vegetarian and West Lynn Cafe was a frequent choice for dinners with her. Cosmic Cafe, based on a restaurant in Dallas, replaces West Lynn Cafe in Clarksville.
The menu has an array of eclectic Indian inspired choices and interesting prices--they don't believe in rounding the numbers (an Indian tradition perhaps? I know that it is considered unlucky to give a gift with a round number to someone). So the pappadam was $1.53 (a bit high in my opinion). The menu was eclectic enough that I stuck to the "No Bull Burger"...which despite the description was not a black bean burger but a vegetarian burger. My wife got enchiladas. Both were decent. The dahl must have been quite good--dad said it tasted just like home (remember mom gives Indian cooking classes). The food was tasty but not something that will cause cravings--as the best Indian food does for me (the naan at Bombay Bistro for example).
Hot chai--and yes they did make it correctly with good spicing, and a heavy dose of milk, is complimentary. My brother had several cups. One of my favorite drinks, Mango lassi, is also on the menu--didn't get a chance to try it this time. Bring your own beer or wine though because they don't serve either.
Service was enthusiastic--cheerleading each dish. The only sour note is when we changed our mind about dessert they were no where to be found. We ended up walking down the street to Cipollina and picked up a Strawberry Cake.
Would I go back...yes..if I'm in the neighborhood...for the tea, to try out the mango lassi..and give it another try. Will it become a regular place for Indian food...probably not.
Cosmic Cafe, 1110 W Lynn St, Austin, 78703 - (512) 482-0950
I work just down the street, eating lunch there at least once a week. I was quite disappointed when West Lynn Cafe closed, but have come to love the new, earthy vibe that Cosmic brings to the neighborhood.
The "Bombay Sage" is one of the best dishes. It's three whole wheat tortillas filled with deliciously spicy lentils and a decent garden salad.
And "Buddas Delight" is always a great deal ~$9: very filling and balanced with dahl, pappadam, spinach/tofu curry, rice & a samosa.
